Over the years, a number of solvers for various types of puzzles have emerged. Many of the most common solvers are listed below, organized by category. Some of them are free and some have a cost associated with them, as indicated in the description.

Word Puzzles

Anagrams

  • Andy's Anagram Solver - An online resource that is useful for multi-word anagrams.
  • Gwerdy Wordy - Freeware anagram, crossword, and Scrabble solver.
  • Internet Anagram Server - An online resource that is useful for multi-word anagrams. The advanced controls allow for word length restrictions, specific word inclusion/exclusion, etc.
  • LeXpert - A free anagram solver with many of the same features as TEA, but the dictionaries may be more limited. This site appears to be down. Try this archived copy of the site: LeXpert Archive
  • TEA 2.7 - A popular and flexible anagram solver with a large number of dictionaries available. A free evaluation version with a large but limited dictionary, but for the fully featured product, you will need to pay $30.00.

Crosswords

  • One Across - Tool for solving crossword clues and finding word patterns.
  • Cruciverb - Online clue database accessible to subscribers. Also exceptionally useful to puzzle setters.

Wordplay

  • NPL Wordplay Tools - National Puzzler League's online tools for identifying various types of wordplay.

Cryptic Crosswords

  • Crossword Maestro - A remarkably good cryptic crossword solver, but it comes at a cost of $75.00 (or a 2-week free trial). The solver is interactive and while it is not perfect, combined with human judgement, it certainly may help speed up the solving process.

Tune Recognition

  • Noteworthy Composer - For the tone-deaf presented with a textual series of notes, this software is a life saver.
